Seminar Video - Artificial intelligence reveals seabird mysteries - with Jonas Hentati Sundberg

On the 19 May, the AI, People & Planet initiative hosted Jonas Hentati-Sundberg to hold seminar reporting on the findings and insights from the Baltic Seabird Hackathon. This was a collaboration between; AI Innovation of Sweden, The Swedish University of Agricultural sciences, The Baltic Seabird Project, WWF Sweden and ourselves.

Artificial intelligence reveals seabird mysteries Increases in computing power and availability of data processing algorithms has allow for the utilization of Artificial Intelligence (AI) approaches to solve all kinds of real-world problems. In order to rationalize monitoring of breeding common guillemots (a colonial seabird), an automated video system was set up inside a major seabird colony, which produced 3.8 Tb of video data between May and August 2019. Videos were also live-streamed on the internet which generated 1300 unique citizen-contributed observations through a simple web-interface linked to a database. A hackathon was arranged to analyze the data using AI algorithms. The winning solution uses object detection and deep learning methods to automatically calculate time budgets for the breeding seabirds. The method can provide behavioral data on an unprecedented level of detail but requires significant computation power. I share insights and discuss future possible application of the technology including possible combinations of AI and citizen science approaches. JonasHentati Sundberg is Associate senior lecturer at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences.
